Weekly Wrap-up 2008_30

The weather has been cool in the mornings, warm in the afternoons.

We tried a new Halal restaurant for dinner on Sunday night. Saturday was their first day open. They'd had a lot of customers. They were running out of food!

The waitress needs to learn the menu better and she didn't add up the bill correctly. But the food was tasty. The lamb shwarma was really yummy, better than what we've had most places.

We'll give them a week or two to get settled and go back.

Rich suggested we stop by the trail on the way home on Monday night and take a half hour walk. So we did. Much fun but, Ouch. My left foot wants to start a blister. I soaked it when we got home.

Tuesday was the Tweetup in Half Moon Bay. I offered a fellow Twittterer, @creativesage a ride. I picked her up at BART about 4:10 (perfect timing) after filling up the car with gas. We were back at the house at 4:20. Rich got home 10 minutes later and we headed to HMB. ...

Cosmic Laughtrack Meets Twitter

The Universe has recently been having a great joke at the expense of Twitter.

On Monday, the folks at Twitter implemented a new "antispam policy" that addresses "aggressive following". In theory, this is supposed to affect "Twitter spammers", people who follow thousands in the hopes of getting some to follow back so they can then send messages. In practice, it affects real people, some of the more vocal and positive users of Twitter — the people Twitter should be not be upsetting!

Commercial accounts (e.g. JetBlue) have had to drop customers in order to add customers. High-profile Twitter users who evangelize Twitter to their clients and at conferences cannot add new follower/following relationships.

This is an incredibly stupid limitation that hurts real people more than "spammers". After all, potential spammers don't care if they have to drop 100 to add 100. The ones they drop weren't "buying" their services anyway. There's no "relationship" being lost.

So, where does the Cosmic Laughtrack come in? ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_29

The weather was foggy and cooler this week, at least in the mornings.

I watched a pigeon building a nest in the wall of the building next door to our favorite diner. She'd found a gap in the screening (screening meant to, erm, keep out pigeons :) and was bringing bits of twig. I hope the man who runs the store next door doesn't notice and get the screen repaired.

My TWiki Twitter Reader is working offline, copied to the laptop. I read Twitter "back issues" on the train.

I had to tweak some settings the first morning but all was for the afternoon. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_28

The weather was hot again. I'm betting this is one of the warmest summers on record. It's certainly the hottest we can remember and we've been in this house 20 years.

I had a lovely holiday 3-day weekend that I turned into 4-day holiday by taking an extra PTO day on Monday. Also, I worked from home on Thursday and Tuesday. So... awesome relaxation! (Although, when I got back to Work on Tuesday, there was a lot of "stuff" in my Inbox. Gack!)

I worked on my Twitter feeder for twikifriends (using pyTwerp). It's working quite well. ...

Treasures 2008_28

Forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet
and the winds long to play with your hair.

Colorful Lamp

These are my Treasures for the past fortnight.

  • The colorful lamp we found at a garage sale

  • Yellow Happy face balloons at the car dealership

  • a spiderweb stencil on a black PT cruiser

  • The produce dept at the grocery store - fresh smells, bright colors.

Building a Twitter Reader

One of the features of Twitter is that it runs 24/7/365. (Un)fortunately, I don't. So, I miss things. I especially miss tweets from people in the "other" hemispheres! I didn't want to miss things, so I looked for a solution.

Being a programmer myself, I wanted a solution I could control and tweak if necessary. However, I didn't want to write something from scratch if I didn't have to!

Twitter has a popular, published API, so I figured someone would have written what I wanted. Someone did. I found pyTwerp (written in Python). ...

Sorting Lists in TWiki

Where I work, we have started a TWiki page for "new people" in the department. People are added to the page as they join the group. Each person has a section for a mini-bio and other information. There is a table of contents (TOC) at the top.

The problem: as the page gets larger, it's more difficult to find the entry for a given person. The TOC is ordered by when the person joined. It would be convenient to be able to sort the TOC alphabetically (it's just a list, after all)

I started looking for ways to sort a list in TWiki. As long as I was at it, I figured I might as well look for a generalizable solution that can sort any bullet list. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_27

The weather was mostly nice but the fog rolled in on Thursday. The 4th was completely socked in.

Rich and I both worked from home on Thursday. That makes the long weekend feel even more relaxing.

We went out to lunch on Thursday and I had the largest pile of onion rings I think I've ever been served. No supper Thursday night!

The Camry needed a smog check for registration renewal. That's so much easier now with everything computerized. We can renew on the Web without mailing anything.

We took it down to Quality Tuneup on Thursday and had lunch while we waited for it to go through the process. We passed the check. Toyotas are good for that.

I did lots of TWiki work this week ...

Twitterings - June 2008

These are my Twitter entries for June 2008.

  • Mac OS X TimeMachine got badly confused. It has no log to speak of; "failed" is not a helpful error message. Deleted some backups. OK now. 12:16 PM June 05, 2008

  • Interesting pricing of bell peppers (per pound) at grocery. Green $1.59; Red $2.49; Orange or Yellow $5.99. Why such a dramatic difference? 09:13 PM June 05, 2008

  • Transferring the contents of 500mg Vit C gel caps to half doses. Cat helping with the empties. Snuffle. Patpat. Munch. He ate most of them. 08:53 PM June 06, 2008

  • Lovely day. Clear, blue sky. Wind speed 5mph. Bees floating about without being blown off course. Opening windows. Enjoying this Saturday. 11:07 AM June 07, 2008

  • Found at the store, Canada Dry Sparkling Green Tea Ginger Ale. (Well, of course it's sparkling). Liking both ingredients, I tried it. Tasty. 05:58 PM June 08, 2008

  • Speaking of ginger ale, a co-worker says he has twice been served a Coke + 7-up mixture passed off as "ginger ale" by a bartender. So wrong. 05:59 PM June 08, 2008
