Twitterings - February/March 2008

These are my Twitter entries (including Snibbles) for February and March.

February 2008

  • @ryananderson- re: possible MicroYahooSoft, my emotions are largely triggered by my dislike of seeing M$ "buy" any company. 09:27 AM February 01, 2008

  • M$ has a track record of assimilating companies, killing off the useful parts. Also, I dislike monopolies. Diversity is A Good Thing (tm). 09:29 AM February 01, 2008

  • @eigosays he's cut out people he followed who make Blog update announcements. I LIKE the people I follow to send blog updates to Twitter! 12:45 PM February 01, 2008

  • Classic Twitter Post - lunch! Turkey, warm, with mayo and cranberry sauce on excellent sourdough bread (Raymond' s; local to the SF area.) 12:56 PM February 01, 2008

  • @megfowler- I've not seen the "ignored" variant. What bugs me is when they complain to everyone else BUT me. Just tell me the problem, OK?! 01:18 PM February 01, 2008

  • Snibbles: The Hawaii Chair??: This would drive me bonkers. http://tinyurl.com/238yp4 03:21 PM February 01, 2008

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_13

The weather was cool and windy with some rain on Friday evening.

I've been finding and filling gaps in our installation on the new server — mostly missing Perl modules with a few Apache glitches for that extra bit of fun. Ugh.

Bottled Water Mis-Delivery

We buy five-gallon bottles of (Arrowhead) spring water for drinking and cooking. Today was delivery day. We got the empties collected last night; we had 5 empties. (Last month, they didn't take away the empties because we forgot to put them out and the driver didn't knock or ring the bell.) We already have 6 full bottles in stock so we really don't need a lot of new water.

Rich put a note around the neck of one of the bottles requesting 1 bottle of water. I was up at 7 am and put the empties on the porch by 7:30.

When Rich opened the front door to leave the house to drive to work, there were 5 bottles of water on the porch. One of the new bottles had the original "order form" note carefully transferred to the neck. I looked at it. It was one of the old Calistoga order forms, so the driver could have been confused but... why didn't he ring the bell and ask?

(Why didn't he ring the bell, period? We're getting tired of stealth delivery. We'd much prefer someone else carry those five-gallon bottles of water up the stairs. 1 gallon of water equals 8.33 lbs. 41.6 lbs is heavy.) ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_12

The weather was chilly this week and Very Windy. Brrrr.

Squirrel was very bouncy on Saturday morning. The Crunchy Bowl was Empty! I went out to the living room and he was so excited. He Bounced into the air and turned and Bounced into the kitchen. Look! Look! The Bowl is Empty!

Last week we decided to upgrade cfcl.com to new hardware. On Saturday, we drove into SF to buy a G5 from someone who was selling it on craigslist. The seller lives near the Great Highway. We were early, so we parked at the beach and watched the parasailors and the kites. Wow! Neat! ...

Upgrading to Mac OS X Leopard

Disclaimer: This article documents the problems and solutions we encountered during our recent home server migration from Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) to 10.5 (Leopard). Unless you want to use Mac OS X for a DNS/Mail/Web/... server, this will probably not be a particularly relevant article. And, unless you are technically oriented (and preferably, Unix-literate), you may find some parts of it confusing.

Since December 2006, we have been running our home server system on a Mac mini, running MacOS X (Tiger). Specifically, this is the "consumer client" version of Mac OS X, not the specially labeled (and vastly different) "Mac OS X Server" product.

Recently, said system become unacceptably slow and Rich's investigations with top(1) revealed Very Large Numbers of pageouts. This told us that we needed more RAM and (perhaps) a faster hard disk. Because the mini is not designed for this sort of expansion, we purchased a gently-used Power Mac G5 (2.0 GHz, dual processor, 4 GB RAM).

Then, because it seemed like "The Right Thing To Do At The Time", we installed Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and prepared to migrate our back-end tools and web applications. After all, we've each been running Leopard from a "user perspective" for a few months. It's stable. How bad could the upgrade be?

Whenever you find yourself asking that question, slow down and reconsider. The upgrade worked, eventually, and it was the right thing to do. However, it was not accomplished without considerable frustration. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_11

The weather was mostly pleasant, with some very foggy days. Friday night, it began to rain.

It's Girl Scout Cookie Time. The Brownies are in front of Longs Drugs and the Juniors are in front of Mollie Stones. Sorry girls, I already bought my cookies.

We went to Todai for lunch on Rich's birthday.

When we got home, I grabbed cats and headed off for a good nap. ...

These are my Treasures for the past few weeks.

  • We met a Shiba Inu - cute little doggie, out for a walk with her person past our house. Her name was Keiko. A week later, we met another one!

  • A woman at the CalTrain, wearing a full-length chocolate-brown velvet skirt. Yumm.

My Annual Paean to TurboTax

TurboTax is even more awesome this year. I think it took me two hours, maybe less, to put my tax return together. (Of course, I still put off starting but once I start, it's just so easy.)

If you're still doing your taxes by hand, get a copy of TurboTax. You'll wonder why you waited so long!

WindowShade X for Leopard

Unsanity has finally announced that WindowShade X is available in beta for Mac OS X Leopard. WindowShade is one of our must-have utilities and its absence has been keeping me from upgrading my primary system. Rich has tried the beta on his Work machine and says he's very happy with it.

I'm still waiting for Mighty Mouse (cursor customization) and Xounds (sound customization). But the WindowShade announcement is much-appreciated long-awaited news!

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_09

The weather has been springy - warm days and foggy evenings, lots of wind. Blossoms are everywhere (often blowing!). When it's warm, the air smells wonderful.

We've moved SpamAssassiin processing off the delivery host and onto our front-end "email toaster". I think that's an improvement.
