How Do You Decorate Your Cubicle?

There are times when I am so happy I work in Tech...

To see if people's professional image is affected by what's displayed in their offices, and how recruiters view job candidates who mention personal topics, researchers conducted two separate studies with corporate managers and recruiters.

The verdict? "Family photos, kids' artwork, and favorite knickknacks help personalize an office work space, but too many personal touches reflect poorly on an employee's professional image," says Jeffrey Sanchez-Burks, who teaches management at the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business (, and conducted the studies with two colleagues. Too much is about 22%: If more than one in five objects in your cubicle are non-work-related, others may regard you as less than serious about your job.

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_08

The weather was nice... followed by drippy. It started raining on Tuesday.

We had too many hardware and software travails this week.

On Sunday, Rich put together a Mac OS X system for a friend of his. He tried one box that simply didn't work. He went through a couple of disk drives. He tested this and experimented with that.

The good news is that the friend had a PowerMac G4 he'd been given, so the box stopped being an issue. Rich eventually did find a drive that worked. It just took far too long.

Then we had to troubleshoot the machine that stopped working after Rich had used it it to test the various drives... that turned out to be a cabling error. All more trouble than we needed.

But that was just for starters. ...

Mac OS X Widgets Without the Dashboard

I don't use Mac OS X's Dashboard. I dislike the user interface model. I hate the fact that Dashboard widgets run in their own "layer", as second-class applications. Thus, I have avoided Dashboard since the first time it appeared in Mac OS X. I even go so far as disabling it.

On the other hand, I love widgets. I discovered Konfabulator (now "Yahoo! Widget Engine") long before Apple created Dashboard. I have (and run) a number of widgets every day. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_07

The weather has been springy. The ornamental plums have started bursting out in pink blossoms.

My schedule was unusual this week. I typically work from home on Tuesdays but I had a scheduled meeting this week. I tried to reschedule, but the other people were booked tightly, so I obliged and swapped my work-from-home day for Wednesday.

Of course, the meeting was postponed at the last minute. No one could figure out how to contact me. So... sigh.

Note to self: pay more attention to the urgency of the meeting than to its potential interest value when rearranging schedules. ...

TWiki Community Summit and Meetup

On Thursday and Friday, Feb 14/15, I attended the TWiki Community Summit in Sunnyvale, CA. The location and and wireless internet access for the meeting were provided by Yahoo!. The Summit meetings were followed, on Friday night, by an open TWiki User Meetup.

TWiki Community Summits are organized for TWiki Community members, e.g. core developers, extension developers, doc writers, marketeers and supporters of the TWiki ecosystem in general. Building on the success of the first Summit, held in Rome in August 2007, TWiki community members decided to hold a Summit meeting every six months. ...

Treasures 2008_07

A memory is what is left when something happens and does not completely unhappen.
-- Edward de Bono

These are my Treasures for the past week.

  • A lovely springwarm day.

  • Lunch at Los Panchos in the City. The woman who runs the place always remembers our order, even though we only come in every two or three months. How does she do that?

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_06

The weather was fair this week. Foggy in the morning, pretty in the afternoon. Spring weather starts in February here. However, this year the ornamental plums are late.

I've been doing a lot of work for our home TWiki. Miscellaneous magic. Unfortunately, uncovering a bug or two. ...

The Nissan Cube

I'm a great fan of Toyota automobiles; I've had three. The Camry has more than 150,000 on it now. We put over 200,000 miles on our Corolla and it never flinched. (The only reason we don't have the Corolla anymore is we couldn't fit three cars in the driveway!)

That third car is a Scion xB which I absolutely love, more than any car I've ever driven. It wouldn't be difficult to get me into another Toyota at this point and it would take something special to make me look at another brand.

Nissan just came out with something special: The Nissan Cube. ...

Voting Day

It's Voting Day in California. The People in Charge in our precinct certainly went out of their way to make this difficult and frustrating.

First off, they moved the polling place from our usual location. We arrived to find a sign on the door that said "Your Polling Place Has Moved!" There was no indication of where it had moved to. It only said "Check your sample ballot for the new location."

We hadn't brought the sample ballot with us so we went back to the house. ...

Treasures 2008_05

Smells detonate softly in our memory
like poignant land mines hidden under the weedy mass of years.
Hit a tripwire of smell and memories explode all at once.
A complex vision leaps out of the undergrowth.

-- Diane Ackerman, A Natural History of the Senses

These are my Treasures for the past week.

  • Squirrel and Raven are working out how to play so that both of them enjoy it. Teddy Bear Fight!

Weekly Wrap-up 2008_05

The weather was wet. During a brief non-rainy period, Rich cleaned out the roof gutters with the pressure washer. Strange noises. Cats were not amused.

I looked in the Camry for Rich's misplaced rain hat. I didn't find the hat but I did find 2 inches of standing water in the back. Ugh. Pump and mop. ...
