Weekly Wrap-up 2007_43

The weather was a bit cool but pretty all week.

Harry Homeowner (Rich's alter-ego) put boards on the feet of our teak coffee table and we put that on top of the pine coffee table to make a two-level thing at one end of the screenporch. Now the far end of the porch is less crowded and we can get to the windows to open them.

The cats approve of the new arrangement. ...

Not Safe For Dogs - A Cautionary Tale

We got this story from our veterinarian.

On Friday, a sick dog was brought in. The dog had started vomiting the night before and had progressed to projectile vomiting by the morning.

The vet did an examination. There was a blockage. Time for X-rays and the veterinary version of a plumber's snake. When that didn't solve the problem, the vet recommended emergency surgery. ...

Purple House Press

I discovered Purple House Press in late 2000 while doing a used book search for a copy of The Space Child's Mother Goose by Frederick Winsor. First published by Simon and Schuster 1958, this book had been out of print for decades.

In 2000, Jill Morgan started Purple House Press, with the mission of reviving long lost, but well loved children's books. One of the first books she brought back to life was The Space Child's Mother Goose. I ordered several copies. ...

Bird!

At around 1pm, today, I heard one of my co-workers, Martin, say "That's a bird". Then another co-worker said "It is, it's a bird". I said "Where?" They said "Over here".

And there was a bird on the light fixture next to the wall. An Oregon junco. How did he get into the building.? Hey birdie, what are you doing in here? ...

eBay - Watch out for "Handling" fees

I recently purchased a very small item on eBay. Less than a square inch in size; well under an ounce in weight. I paid $2.99 for the item. Shipping (and "handling") was $7.98.

Following the principle of Never attribute to Malice what can be explained by Stupidity, I assumed this was one of those companies that ships everything by UPS, DHL, or FedEx. I assumed that the carrier charges a silly rate and that the seller passes that on the customer.

It turns out I was wrong. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2007_42

It rained one day this week.

Up at 7:30 on Saturday morning We got ready to go and headed down to the diner for an omelette. Then we walked around the neighborhood for half an hour and then I took Rich to the airport. He was flying to Denver for a few days - a high-end audio show and a visit with friends.

I tripped over a cool feature in the vim editor. I was typing a comment (starting with #) and the line got long and broke to wrap (a setting I set). vim automatically put a # at the beginning of the next line.

Wow. Real DWIM. ...

Blog Action Day 2007

What would happen if every blog published posts on the same topic, on the same day?
One issue. One day. Thousands of voices.

Blogactionday

Today is Blog Action Day

On October 15th, bloggers around the web will unite to put a single important issue on everyone’s mind - the environment. Every blogger will post about the environment in their own way and relating to their own topic. Our aim is to get everyone talking towards a better future.

blogactionday.com

As of this posting, 19,739 bloggers have registered. Bloggers are asked to participate in three ways:

  1. Post on your blog relating to the environment
  2. Donate your day’s earnings to an environmental charity
  3. Promote Blog Action Day around the web

I can't afford to donate a day's earnings; however, I did make a donation today to the National Wildlife Federation. ...

Saying Thank You

Many years ago, I decided that if I wanted the right to complain when I received unacceptable service, I should also be sure to say "Thank You" whenever I received exceptional service. After all, most people only meet expectations. When someone exceeds expectations to a large degree, shouldn't you say something about it? ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2007_41

It rained again, this week. First on Tuesday, all through the night. Then again for most of Friday. It really came down on Friday. It's difficult for me to work when it's raining. I'd rather be curled up with a cat or four.

I've been poking around the web, looking at Twitter tools. I found an RSS feeder (twitterfeed) so I can automatically feed my weblog headlines to Twitter. ...

Twittering: Who, What, and Why

Shortly after I posted my recent entry on Twitter, I sent notes to various e-list groups I read regularly, asking if any of the members use Twitter. A former co-worker replied thusly to my inquiry:

Haven't used Twitter... I think these services are kinda silly. Who cares what I had for lunch today?

Well, that depends. Was it a particularly good lunch? Perhaps at a new and interesting restaurant you would recommend to friends?

Still, if that's your impression of Twitter, you haven't taken a good look at it lately. There's a lot more going on than just "what I had for lunch". ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2007_40

The weather was mostly blue and pretty, cool in the evenings and warm in the afternoons, except for Monday, which was grey and gloomy.

Our favorite grocery store is undergoing a major remodel. ech! This week, all of the front windows are boarded over. It's plywood, inside, from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. I'm afraid I won't be shopping there until the windows are back. It's claustrophobic and a bit creepy. ...
