Weekly Wrap-up 2007_30

The weather was foggy. It's been a very foggy July.

There was another "incident" with CalTrain on Monday morning. We sat at Menlo Park for 20-30 minutes. We made it to Mtn View but after that I saw the train go north instead of south.

There are far too many of these "incidents". There has to be something we can do to keep people away from the tracks.

I've been watching carefully for mousies at the station in the afternoon. They're very cute, very small, and very fast. ...

Scion xB: What Were They Thinking?!

We love our Scion xB. From the moment I sat in it, I was hooked. I had to have this car.

It handles beautifully. It has Head Room. It has more cargo space than one might imagine. And windows - does it have windows. No visibility problems in this car!

I'm so happy we bought one when we did. I also hope our 2005 model lasts a long time because after 2007 Toyota stopped making them. Oh, they still make something called a "Scion xB" but... what were the (re)designers thinking?!

It's... puffy. It looks like it's suffering a severe allergic reaction to something. The current colors are pretty but What's With The Smaller Windows?! Are they mad?

Toyota took the perfect car and "improved" it. And we all know what "New and Improved" means. With chocolate bars or dish soaps or cat food it means Run Out Quick and hit all the stores, stocking up on the "old" stuff before it's all gone. With cars it means be happy you got in when you did.

Better isn't always Better. But Better is always Different.

Two Bean Chili

Rich bought a can of chili the other day. The label read "Two-Bean, Beef, and Tomato Chili. I said "I can see kidney beans; what's the other kind?"

Rich fished something out of the pot. Looks like a bean... I wonder what kind. So, I read the label. And there in the ingredients, I found it. ...

The Magic of Harry Potter

I realized that one of the things I like best about Harry Potter is that he appeals to adults. Fans of Harry Potter are not limited to the 8-10 set

I was first introduced to Harry Potter, back when the first book came out, by a co-worker. My parents (who obviously have children, but whose children are, literally, my age :-) have read Harry Potter and seen the movies. . I've been talking about the latest movie with friends at work. They're all adults; many of them have no children.

Rich and I have all of the books. In fact, we own two sets of Harry Potter books - the standard US hardcover editions, and the UK hardcover "adult editions". That there is an "adult" edition speaks, er... volumes.

Treasures 2007_29

Anecdotes and maxims are rich treasures to the man of the world, for he knows how to introduce the former at fit place in conversation. - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Treasures are positive things that strike my fancy, that make me feel happy or thankful or interested. Treasures are memories encapsulated in just a few words. These are my Treasures for the past week.

Weekly Wrap-up 2007_29

Catching up... three weeks of July to cover.

The weather has been largely warm (when its not foggy :-). We had one delightful out-of season rainstorm at night. I woke up to it, then lay in bed and listened. Mmmmmm.

We did the July 3rd Fireworks at Stanford as we've done for several years now. We ate leftovers at home, then drove down at 7:15.

I missed the turn (they're doing construction and things looked dfferent.) and we got lost; ended up on Serra almost to ECR. I fought my way back to Junipero Serra and we tried again, stopping at the map this time. Left turn on Mayfield. 50 yards to the parking lot.

We found a good spot and I read for a while. Rich lent me his keyfob flashlight when it got too dark. The fireworks started at 9:45. Boom. Whistling weasels. Firefalls. Flares that exploded into balls of sparks. ...

Treasures 2007_27

If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy,
if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you,
if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand,
rejoice, for your soul is alive.

iPhone? Not My Phone.

It's slim and sleek and fits nicely in the hand. The icons are colorful, crisp and clear. It looks like a piece of art glass. It's the iPhone and many of my co-workers have purchased one.

It's difficult to not want an iPhone. The screen resolution is impressive. Movies are incredibly clear. It's a work of Art meets Engineering meets Excellent Design.

It has just one basic missing piece. For me, it's a fatal flaw.

Weekly Wrap-up 2007_26

The weather was lovely.

CalTrain had a very bad day on Thursday. First they had a bunch of "control points" fail on the line — the things that set the track indicators and signal lights. They were setting things by hand.

Then, in the afternoon, the 365 northbound hit a car on the tracks in Palo Alto. The 365 is the train I take if I leave work at 4:11 instead of 4:30. (I wasn't on the 365 on Thursday). ...
