Weekly Wrap-up 2007_17

The weather was nice.

There were some interesting birds in the street in front of the house this morning. They were a bit bigger than blackbirds, similar coloring (but with brown streaks), and moved like quail. They were finding and eating worms left by the recent rain.

According to the bird book, they're starlings ...

Treasures 2007_17

Any man that walks the mead
In bud, or blade, or bloom, may find
A meaning suited to his mind.
— Alfred Tennyson

Treasures are positive things that strike my fancy, that make me feel happy or thankful or interested. Treasures are memories encapsulated in just a few words. These are my Treasures for the past week.

  • The bag of magnetic rocks Rich bought at The Tech museum.

  • a hummingbird, buzzing around the flowers on a small palm tree (outside the window at the chiropractor's office) - so close.

New TV

Our new flat-screen high-res LCD TV (DVD monitor) arrived yesterday. We had it shipped. The dealer told us to expect delivery between 11 am and 4 pm.

We went out, briefly, at 9:00 am to run a few errands and get breakfast. We were back at the house by 10:15 and I took the kitties downstairs with me and shut us all in while I worked.

The day passed. 11:00, noon, 2:00 pm, ... 4:00 pm. No truck. No delivery. No TV. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2007_16

The weather was mostly good. Windy. Rain on Thursday. The sun keeps rising earlier and setting later. This is my favorite time of year.

I joined the "after lunch stair walk" at work. One of my co-workers tries to do a daily walk, up to and around the 3rd floor twice, up to and around the 3rd floor twice, and then twice around the building outside. He's getting people to go with him. It's good exercise, although (huff) the 3rd floor (puff) is a challenge . ...

To sit in the shade on a fine day and look upon verdure is the most perfect refreshment.

  • Ravens in the nearby park, surfing the wind, obviously having a great time.

Catku

Catku

What is the Sound of One Cat Napping?

I bought a delightful little book called Catku.

The origins of the ancient Japanese poetic form known as Haiku are shrouded in mystery and legend. Among these legends are — well, frankly, no mention of cats at all. But if a cat had a spiritual discipline, it seems that it would inevitably be Zen. And if a cat were to express himself in poetry, it seems equally inevitable that his preferred form would be the compact, often inscrutable, sometime abrupt, always provocative seventeen syllables of Haiku...

From the front (cat) flap of Catku, by Pat Welch.

Printed in brown and sepia tones on parchment-look paper, illustrated with woodcuts and Kanji characters, Catku expresses the essence of the feline in one hundred paw-sized verses.

You seek fulfillment
Through love, wealth, travel, career.
Have you tried kittens?

Weekly Wrap-up 2007_15

The weather was variable. We had some rain, some clear days, lots of wind...

Rich helped me put together a "cubicle curtain". We bought a large, tight spring and a length of dowel rod. Rich mounted the spring on a board and attached magnet tape to the underside. The dowel slips into the end of the spring and I can hang a curtain on the dowel. because of the spring, if anyone walks into it, it will move. ...

Treasures 2007_15

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread,
places to play in and pray in,
where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.

-- John Muir

  • My new cubicle at the Job.

  • Watching each day get light earlier and stay light later. It's almost summer.

Weekly Wrap-up 2007_14

The weather has been lovely...

I moved cubicles at The Job. The new location is quite nice. I have a window (tra la) and plenty of Natural Light. It's still noisy, unfortunately; there are some chatty people just over the wall and we're also near the largest conference room. There was a big meeting on Monday (with applause, whistles, cheering... Sheesh) ...

Treasures 2007_13,14

We ascribe beauty to that which is simple; which has no superfluous parts; which exactly answers its end; which stands related to all things; which is the mean of many extremes.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Treasures are positive things that strike my fancy, that make me feel happy or thankful or interested. Treasures are memories encapsulated in just a few words. These are my Treasures for the past week.

  • More spring flowers including some lovely pink carnation-like blossoms

  • A "conversation" with a teeny little bird, perhaps a type of Nuthatch? (chirp chirp)

  • Relaxing on the couch, covered in cats
