Weekly Wrap-up 2006_43

This was my first week as a FTE on the Job so I spent the morning in orientation. because I've been a contractor for several months, I got to skip the afternoon sessions.

We had an "adventure" this week. We got a flat tire! ...

Everybody needs his memories.
They keep the wolf of insignificance from the door.

Treasures are positive things that strike my fancy, that make me feel happy or thankful or interested. Treasures are memories encapsulated in just a few words. These are my Treasures for the past week.

U is For...

  • Umbrella - When I was little, I loved a book about Davey and the Big Yellow Umbrella. The umbrella was so large that Davey's father cut square holes in it, inserted clear plastic, and taped up the sides, so Davey could see through.

  • Unix - I was introduced to the Unix operating system shortly after meeting Richard (who had recently purchased a Sun Microsystems workstation). Unix is my preferred operating system for programming. I've been working with Unix since 1983.

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_42

The weather was nice and Octobery.

This was my second week telecommuting two days. Two lower-stress days each week. Delightful.

Rich's new contract started this week. For the first few weeks, he'll be driving down to Redwood City most days. Eventually, he should be able to work from home a lot. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_41

The weather was pleasant. Very Octobery.

What a difference a year makes. This October, I'm in a company where my management LIKES what I'm doing and isn't trying to change me into someone I'm not.

When I got home on Monday evening, there were 9 bottles of water on the front porch. Apparently Arrowhead is re-working the delivery schedule (again) and our next delivery won't be until Nov. 27. Still, 9 bottles?! ...

Treasures 2006_41

To find the universal elements enough;
to find the air and the water exhilarating;
to be refreshed by a morning walk or an evening saunter;
to be thrilled by the stars at night;
to be elated over a bird's nest or a wildflower in spring -
these are some of the rewards of the simple life.

— John Burroughs

Friday the 13th

At lunch, our waitress mentioned that today was Friday the 13th. She said a black cat ran across her path this morning.

I said that a black cat crosses my path most every morning (and evening, and often in the afternoons as well). We agreed that when he's your cat, that makes it good luck.

Purrrrrrs.

S is For...

  • San Francisco - The City. San Francisco defines our local metropolitan area. We visit often but I wouldn't want to actually live in the City. My sister and I visited San Francisco the year I graduated from College and she graduated from High School. I knew I would come back (and, a little over three years later, I did).

  • Science - I "majored" in science in High School. I took every science class that was offered. We were required to take one science class in three years. I took two a year.

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_40

It's officially Winter in the SF Bay Area. It was sprinkling a bit when I got out of the bus at the train station on Wednesday afternoon. It started raining shortly after I got home and rained steadily all evening, through the night, and into Thursday morning.

This week, I took advantage of working for a large Technical Company and attended a presentation by a a Senior Product Manager from Apple on Accessibility and Apple's "Voice Over" product, a "screen reader that's part of Tiger. ...

Almost Birch Beer

We recently tried Henry Weinhard Draught-style Root Beer and Oh My, is it Good! Unless you grew up in Pennsylvania Dutch county like I did, you probably won't understand what I'm talking about, but I was pleased and surprised to discover that the taste is reminiscent, (to me, anyway), of Birch Beer!

Enjoy a truly great American Root Beer recipe, originally crafted by our master brewers during prohibition. This gourmet elixir, brewed with sassafras, vanilla and honey, proved to be a popular alternative for our beer-drinking loyalists both during, and after, the "great dry spell." Our tradition of providing only the highest quality beverages continues today in each bottle that bears our founder's name, Brewmaster Henry Weinhard.

  • Raccoons - We get raccoons in our back yard at night. They come to the feeder and eat seed or just walk back and forth on the sunroom roof. They're very cute. Sometimes I go out on the deck and toss marshmallows for them to eat.

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_39

The weather was lovely. Other than that...

On Monday, I got stuck in Menlo Park for an hour when CalTrain stopped due to some Bozo leaving a car on the tracks. No one was hurt, but a lot of people were inconvenienced. Some days it really doesn't pay to take transit.

Tuesday's commute was uneventful and reasonably quick. ...

The Wrong Day to Take the Train

This was one of those days that makes you wonder why you thought commuting by public transit was a good idea. Rich had an afternoon meeting in the South Bay, so he drove me to the station where I caught the 8:17 train.

Unfortunately, a northbound train apparently hit a car, "abandoned on the tracks" near California Ave in Palo Alto, right around the time I was boarding my train. So my southbound train started off normally, then slowed down, then stopped in Menlo Park with a train ahead and a train behind. And we sat there. ...

If you read my weblog regularly, you may have noticed that my posting has become.. erratic. There will be nothing for as much as a week, then, suddenly, I post three or four entries (usually backdated).

There's a reason for this. I can't claim it's a good reason, but here it is: ...
