Treasures 2006_39

In every man's heart there is a secret nerve that answers to the vibrations of beauty.
-- Christopher Morley

Treasures are positive things that strike my fancy, that make me feel happy or thankful or interested. Treasures are memories encapsulated in just a few words. These are my Treasures for the past week.

  • A thin crescent moon over the ridge

  • A tangerine sun, rising over the Bay - a bright orange disk above a pinkish orange layer, not so bright that we couldn't look at it. Awesome.

Q is For...

Q is For...

  • QALITY - When I was playing Quality Lead, I got a license plate that read QALITY (note the missing U; it's a joke). So many people failed to "get" the joke that I applied for a new plate less than a year later.

Balancing Time

In today's commentary, I discuss a secret that good managers know (and mediocre managers may never understand):

Increased productivity does not mean increased time. In fact, the reverse is true. Productivity is defined by work over time. To be more productive, you do more work in the same amount (or a smaller amount!) of time.

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_38

The weather was very nice again. No rain yet this year. Last year at this time we had a thunderstorm!

I adjusted my schedule again. If I get up at 6:30 and keep moving, I can catch the 7:29 train. This gets me in to the Job by 8:15 (so I get in 8 hours, yet I don't feel like I'm staying later than I'd like). Traffic is much less congested. Parking is easier. AND the train is one of the newer ones, which I really like.

I can do this. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_37

The weather was nice. Some days were even a bit warmer than we might have preferred.

After fourteen weeks on the Job, I finally have a Mac. My fingers work again. I can stop swearing at the computer. After the Mac was all configured and working, I requested, and received without argument, a second monitor. Apparently CRTs are not difficult to come by. ...

Fear of Spinach

I had my favorite breakfast this morning - Eggs Florentine. The waitress said, "You don't want spinach". I asked why not. She told me there'd been a recall. I said "I think cooked is OK."

I went home and looked up the recall on Google. Approximately 100 people across the country (32 in Wisconsin) have been diagnosed with E-coli food poisoning. It may be linked to bagged spinach. ...

O is For...

WordPlay: The Personal Dictionary Meme

O is For...

  • Oatmeal - I like oatmeal. When I was growing up and we'd visit my grandmother for a weekend, we always had oatmeal, with maple sugar, and bacon sandwiches for breakfast on Saturday morning. I'm fond of oatmeal cookies too.

  • Ocean - Growing up in Central Pennsylvania, I didn't see a lot of ocean. Now we live a few miles from the Pacific. I really like that.

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_36

What better way to start a week than with a holiday Monday.

Happy birthday to my sister. Which 35th birthday is this?

I came down with a cold on Saturday and kept it through most of the week. So, I worked at home when I could and then napped in the afternoon.

Nyquil is good medicine. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_35

The weather was nice all week, although it's obviously not summer anymore. The sun is rising later and later every morning (and I tend to wake up better when there's light outside).

In response, I decided to change my schedule. I've started waking up one hour later and taking a later train. I experimented on Tuesday and started the new schedule on Thursday. So far, it's working very well.

Summer is officially over. The local kids started their new school year on Thursday. I have very mixed feelings, and memories, about school. ...

I Say it's Still a Planet

I've been watching the nomenclature wars for years. First protozoans were renamed protista (did anyone ask their opinion?). Then centrifugal force was refuted and the force that makes an (ahem) centrifuge operate is now called centripetal (never mind that the result is exactly the same).

And now, where there were nine, there are eight. ...
