Weekly Wrap-up 2006_30

The weather started out hot) at the beginning of the week but ended much cooler, thank goodness.

Rich and I met for dinner in Mountain View on Monday after (my) job and (his) meeting. We walked up Castro St. looking for a place to eat. Most of the restaurants were without power! We finally found one that was open, in almost the last block.

Later, I learned that some 60,000 people in Santa Clara county were without power from Sunday night through part of Tuesday. Ugh! Apparently a lot of transformers couldn't handle the load. ...

Treasures 2006_30

To be a soulful person means to go against all the pervasive,
prove-yourself values of our culture and instead
treasure what is unique and internal and valuable
in yourself and your own personal evolution.

Treasures are positive things that strike my fancy, that make me feel happy or thankful or interested. Treasures are memories encapsulated in just a few words. These are my Treasures for the past week.

  • A musical tattoo - a young man at the BART station with a staff of musical notes tattooed on his upper arm.

  • Two ducks flying over as the shuttle drove away from the Workplace.

H is For...

  • Hacker - Being a hacker is a good thing. In recent times, the word has been misused by the media, but it originally had only positive connotations. The basic difference is this: hackers build things, crackers break them.

  • Hair - My hair is a medium auburn color and wavy (not curly). I like my hair. It kinks up in humid weather, which we had a lot of when I was living in Pennsylvania and Maryland. However, the weather in Northern California, where I live now, is perfect. My mother used to occasionally suggest I "do something about my hair". I don't think she had in mind my moving to California, but it worked.

Opening Pill Bottles

Do you have trouble opening foil-sealed pill bottles? I used to try to unpeel it, try to pierce it with the thumb nail, grab a knife or scissors. Then a friend of ours shared a trick that really works.

  1. Unscrew and remove the bottle cap.
  2. Holding the bottle firmly in one hand, smack the foil-covered opening into the corner of the nearest cabinet, poking a good-sized hole in the foil covering.
  3. Remove the rest of the foil with your fingers.

You're most likely in the bathroom or kitchen when you're opening a bottle of this sort, surrounded by cabinets with nice, square, pointed metal or wood corners.Pick one and use it.

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_29

The weather was HOT. Unpleasantly, miserably, biggest topic of conversation, day and night, don't wanna do anything, too darn hot. Ugh.

Monday was a Spare the Air day, as were Thursday and Friday. Wednesday was muggy (muggy! here!!). By Friday it was most uncomfortable. On Saturday morning, it was 82 degrees in our bedroom at 10am. On Sunday evening, 90,000 people in the hottest East and South Bay locations were still without power, many because of blown transformers.

We're very happy that we live on the Peninsula. By 10pm Sunday, it had cooled down enough where we live that we could close the windows. ...

Pepperball

Rich and I really like freshly-ground black pepper. We have quite a few pepper grinders, including a very small one that fits in a purse or beltpack!

Recently, we found (and bought) a nifty new pepper grinder design. It's called a Pepperball.

The Pepperball has a pair of vertical handles you squeeze together to grind the pepper. It also adjusts to 5 different degrees of coarseness.

You can buy either a large or small size Pepperball. There's a Saltball too if salt is your thing.

We got ours at Target.

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_28

The weather was very pleasant this week.

I've had lots of work to do for the job. I enjoy editing documents and re-organizing the TWiki to be more accessible.

I got a nice compliment. One of my co-workers came by and thanked me for the work I did the previous afternoon on his proposal document. He said "I expected to be up half the night working on it and I looked at what you did and I didn't have to change anything". ...

If I Have to Use Windows

At least I can make the best of a bad deal

I have to use Windows for my current job (not by choice and not for lack of trying to get a Mac OS X system instead). And, while I can use Windows, I don't like it. So... I've made some modifications, installing various applications and extensions that make Windows look and feel... not so much like Windoze. ...

Weekly Wrap-up 2006_27

The weather was nice this week - pleasant at home and not too hot elsewhere (except in the afternoons while waiting at the train station.)

We went down to Stanford to watch the fireworks on the 3rd. This year we didn't take a picnic but ate at home, then drove down. We arrived in plenty of time to get good seats.

With the Tuesday holiday, many companies, including the one I'm working at, gave Monday as a holiday as well. so I had a 4-day weekend and a 3-day week. While this means I didn't get paid for those two days, the time off was worth it. ...

Happy Fourth!

Happy Fourth of July, Independence Day, 230th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. I have always admired Tom, Ben, John, and the rest.

Rich and I drove down to Stanford last night to watch the fireworks display. I expect there to be a smaller display in our neighborhood tonight after the sun sets.

We put out our flag. It has the standard field of stars but rainbow stripes, representing the Diversity of the USA.

Happy Fourth of July. Cherish your Freedoms. Protect the Constitution. Remember what the Founding Fathers had in mind.

Memory is the treasurer of the mind.

  • Meeting a handsome, sleek, black short-haird kitty named Enders. I think Enders has some Siamese in his ancestry. He had a great profile. He was most curious and sociable.
  • Exploring the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park - all sorts of nifty tropical plants, huge pitcher plants, bright flowers, blooming water lilies, mosses, and ferns. The current special exhibition is the butterfly room where we were constantly accosted by gently fluttering flutterbies.
