Why I love Twitter

The Inauguration of our 44th US President is on Tuesday (Yes We Can!) and I have been enjoying a front-row seat at several events this weekend. Well, maybe not exactly the front row, but close. Sort of.

In Real Life, I'm in California, a place where water will not freeze if you accidentally leave it out over night. Yet, through the eyes and "tweets" of folks such as Chris Sacca, Ana Marie Cox, Erin Kotecki Vest, and others, I am virtually in Washington, D.C. this weekend.

Through the eyes of ferry passenger Janis Krums, I watched the passengers of a plane evacuate in the Hudson River earlier this week. In Nov. 2008, I watched events unfold in Mumbai. I watched last year as water ice was discovered on Mars.

I have "virtually" attended conferences in New York City and Chicago thanks to live tweets from real-lfe attendees such as Whitney Hess. I've climbed the hills of Greece with Tim O'Reilly. I've watched the raccoons in the Woods of Waldeck and the birds in Plummer's Hollow, Pennsylvania.

On this long holiday January weekend in California, I'm "present" at a historic event 2500 miles away, where people braving the cold and the crowds are sharing what they see and hear with friends and followers around the world. I can do this because Twitter has provided the tools for people to share what they're experiencing right now, in real time.

Thanks Twitter. It's a Brave New World.
