Weekly Wrap-up 2008_50

The weather was gray, blue, warmish, chilly, and rainy. Mostly in that order.

December dawned gray and foggy. Ugh. If there had been any cars on the road without headlights the morning of Dec. 1st, I would never have known it. It was grey all the way to work. The fog got higher and higher so by 4pm it was "merely" overcast. But still dismally grey.

I enjoyed viewing the Jupiter, Venus, moon conjunction. It was nice to know what I was looking at.

So far, it's been a rocky month at the Company. Our VP, to whom the full dept reports, is going out on leave. In her absence, we get a new VP, and he'll be a "permanent" replacement. This makes me sad and concerned.

A week later, layoffs rock the Company. I lost my manager (whom I like) and two co-workers in other teams, people I worked closely with who were good at their jobs.

Company layoffs rarely correlate with sensible decisions. It's an unhappy month.

Eek. I took a small "excursion" this week.

I've been taking the train for 2 and a half years. This week, for the first time, I missed my stop. I think the conductor must have called Menlo Park twice.

I looked up from my book and said "That's the Caltrain train yard. Why am I in San Jose?!"

I got out at Diridon station, walked over the the next train north. Not a bullet. (Should have waited; it pulled onto a siding halfway back for the bullet to pass.) I finally got to Mountain View, then waited another 10 minutes until a bus came, and another 15 till it left. I got to work at 9:05, an hour later than usually.

That was Layoff Day. The Cosmic Laugh Track was in rare form.

Rain today. Nice long snuggle with cats. I like rainy weekends.

So far this month I've read Cry Wolf, an urban fantasy in a series by Patricia Briggs. I also read Halting State, a cyber-future mystery by Charles Stross. If you're a programmer or a gamer, try this one. If not, I don't advise it. (I liked it a lot.)

In between and around the rest, I've had nearly enough naps and oodles of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. We had dinner this week with friends and former co-workers. The Outback now has carrot cake. It's very good carrot cake, too.

I've chatted with my sister and found topics to twitter.

Onward and Upward.
