Twitterings - June 2008

These are my Twitter entries for June 2008.

  • Mac OS X TimeMachine got badly confused. It has no log to speak of; "failed" is not a helpful error message. Deleted some backups. OK now. 12:16 PM June 05, 2008

  • Interesting pricing of bell peppers (per pound) at grocery. Green $1.59; Red $2.49; Orange or Yellow $5.99. Why such a dramatic difference? 09:13 PM June 05, 2008

  • Transferring the contents of 500mg Vit C gel caps to half doses. Cat helping with the empties. Snuffle. Patpat. Munch. He ate most of them. 08:53 PM June 06, 2008

  • Lovely day. Clear, blue sky. Wind speed 5mph. Bees floating about without being blown off course. Opening windows. Enjoying this Saturday. 11:07 AM June 07, 2008

  • Found at the store, Canada Dry Sparkling Green Tea Ginger Ale. (Well, of course it's sparkling). Liking both ingredients, I tried it. Tasty. 05:58 PM June 08, 2008

  • Speaking of ginger ale, a co-worker says he has twice been served a Coke + 7-up mixture passed off as "ginger ale" by a bartender. So wrong. 05:59 PM June 08, 2008

  • Backup drive reports "incorrect number of file hard links". Repairing thousands of instances. Perhaps this explains Time Machine "failures". 08:50 AM June 09, 2008

  • @megfowler- I would be at home. It's Monday. It's sunny. I'd rather be anywhere other than an office building breathing filtered air. 08:57 AM June 09, 2008

  • My Squishable Alligator arrived today. He's sitting in my cubicle looking strange and squishable. Chenille "skin". http://tinyurl.com/2d8vj5 01:15 PM June 11, 2008

  • CSS fails silently when there are syntax errors. I keep finding and fixing niggling errors. Why can't I find the LAST ONE? They're breeding! 08:58 AM June 12, 2008

  • @44ounce- Happy birthday to your daughter. What fun, choosing a fruit tree for a birthday. It will grow with her and give presents yearly. 09:40 PM June 12, 2008

  • IMac OS X 10.5.3 users: if you've observed your browser hang, vanish, can't relaunch, try this solution posted at http://tinyurl.com/6l9g2u 10:56 AM June 13, 2008

  • @mdy- doubleclicking in the tab bar creates a new tab in Camino as well as Firefox. Nice trick. Thanks for sharing! 11:05 AM June 13, 2008

  • @loresjoberg- Wow, 8-bit tarot! These do look great. I've ordered mine and look forward to the full set. I collect interesting tarot decks. 06:23 PM June 13, 2008

  • retweeting @stoweboydOverload, Schmoverload: The Myth Of Personal Productivity http://twurl.nl/1dmq5h "and the juice is worth the squeeze" 11:04 AM June 14, 2008

  • Saturday: one load of dishes and two loads of laundry. I'm reading on the couch with the cat. My appliances are being industrious for me. 12:15 PM June 14, 2008

  • @gnat- Ugh! probably alcohol and not mercury but that doesn't matter to the toffee batch. Metal thermometers win. http://tinyurl.com/6fqtog 05:14 PM June 14, 2008

  • @Pistachio- in friends I look for how they treat me and how they make me feel. After that, I care abut what they tell me. Who? Not so much. 07:35 PM June 14, 2008

  • @missrogueFor me I'd put communication first, passion second and supportive before kind. Interesting set. Traits to think about, for sure. 07:41 PM June 14, 2008

  • @PistachioI prefer the "techie" personality - intelligence, honesty, curiosity, problem solving, questioning. Reliability also important. 07:53 PM June 14, 2008

  • I've been learning about TWiki RSS. The twiki.org newsletter now has an RSS feed. Latest newsletter: http://tinyurl.com/6y5syb @twikifriends09:17 AM June 15, 2008

  • More TWiki magic. This time importing individual rows from a table that lives on another page. Slightly hoaky, but results are acceptable. 01:41 PM June 16, 2008

  • Just renewed my automobile registration at dmv.ca.gov. So nice not to have to write a check, find a stamp, get to a mailbox. I love the web. 08:02 AM June 17, 2008

  • Rubbing the cat. She's loving it. I've got cat hair on my keyboard, but what else is new. Happy cats and work-from-home = job satisfaction. 02:18 PM June 17, 2008

  • Ordered an iSkin for my Mac keybooard. I've thought about this from time to time but never made the "cat hair protection" connection. Duh! 10:05 PM June 17, 2008

  • Overslept this morning. Bad dreams. When the alarm when off, I relaxed and fell asleep again. Only for half an hour but cause for hurrying. 07:28 AM June 18, 2008

  • Made it to the station in time for the second train. Schedule gives me two choices, 15 min apart. After that, 45 minutes till the next pair. 07:31 AM June 18, 2008

  • Watching man at the next table do battle with the ketchup, bottle vertical. Smacking the bottom. Shaking up/down. Low success; high humor. 08:45 PM June 18, 2008

  • Ketchup is thixotropic. It liquifies where you hit it. Tap the bottle near the mouth for optimum flow. Smack the bottom for amusement value. 08:51 PM June 18, 2008

  • @podcastmama- I also love the smell of tomato plants. Wouldn't that make a divine hand soap? I miss having tomato plants. Wrong climate. 09:52 PM June 18, 2008

  • Problem on our email server this evening. Running out of disk space. Why? SpamAssassin auto-whitelist file filled 65 GB! We turned that off. 10:49 PM June 18, 2008

  • Spare The Air day. I tapped a woman buying a BART ticket. Free till noon today. "OMG! I forgot!" I could hear her exclaiming as I walked on. 07:38 AM June 19, 2008

  • @MWendyHaylett- I played cornet from 4th grade through HS. Band and marching band. Sold it to Dad's co-worker's daughter after graduation. 08:58 AM June 19, 2008

  • Catered meeting down the hall. They've rolled out the red carpet for this one. Or, at least, the fancy, white, not-recycled-paper napkins. 10:13 AM June 19, 2008

  • @bushgeek- I had a job where I went to work, didn't do much, and still got paid. It drove me bonkers. I found something more interesting. 11:28 PM June 19, 2008

  • @isabelwang- Apples have cores. Oranges have to be peeled (as do bananas, but). Bananas better in cereal (and smoothies). Banana = easier. 11:40 PM June 19, 2008

  • @jemmons- rote memorization was outdated long before cell phones. Schools should be teaching research: how to search and use what you find. 07:29 AM June 20, 2008

  • Fans running, windows open; blinds drawn on windows that don't open. Cats melted into the carpet. 87 F in my living room. It's too hot here. 12:20 PM June 20, 2008

  • @doshdosh- I like Twitter for updates on what peopla are doing/thinking/feeling. Small short conversations too but I prefer reading you. 12:23 PM June 20, 2008

  • I turned off "replies to people I don't follow". I find my Twitter stream is more manageable and much more interesting to me. Still some @. 12:26 PM June 20, 2008

  • @Veronica- Spore creature is cute(?). I want to pet it. Will it bite my hand? Looking at others. Some very scary growly. Preferring meeps. 12:40 PM June 20, 2008

  • Let Yahoo be Yahoo - great post by John (@THErealDVORAK) Dvorak in Market Watch. He says what I've said, better. http://tinyurl.com/66lu3a 12:59 PM June 20, 2008

  • A friend in Colorado writes "A fawn was born on front lawn this morning." That is so awesome. All together now, say Awwww. A dear baby deer! 01:02 PM June 20, 2008

  • Humming songs of praise to the creators of Unix, Henry Spencer, and @siegelfor the invention of regular expressions and BBEdit to run them. 04:04 PM June 20, 2008

  • The search and replace procedure that just took me 10 min. would have been Very Painful (and risky) without regexen and a great Text editor. 04:06 PM June 20, 2008

  • My 8-bit Tarot cards arrived yesterday, perfect size and delightfully creative. If you collect Tarot, or fun art! http://tinyurl.com/hldpj 09:36 AM June 21, 2008

  • Downloaded Firefox 3. I prefer Camino for history and bookmark management but FF is my alternate browser (for plugins). Walnut theme is fun. 09:39 AM June 21, 2008

  • Sea Breeze! Wind speed 11.3 mph; temp back under 70 F. Nature's Air Conditioning has kicked in again. Weather forecast for fog by Monday am. 06:49 PM June 21, 2008

  • @TWalkWhen we visited Copenhagen, we totally missed Legoland; Go! Do visit Tivoli Gardens. And walk! It's a beautiful city, night and day. 07:59 PM June 21, 2008

  • I wish Twitter had an "edit" capability - even if it only worked within an hour after posting. Feels stupid to delete and repost, but I did. 08:08 PM June 21, 2008

  • Dinner at the Pho' place. Mango "milkshake" with Perl. "Crab cake", more like crustless souffle - crab, egg, rice noodles. Unusual. Not bad. 09:37 PM June 21, 2008

  • Sitting on the couch, reading Twitter. Cat drowsing on back of couch, just behind my head. If he falls asleep, which way will he roll? 11:12 PM June 21, 2008

  • We've replaced our kitty lawn with new grass. The cats had loved the old one nearly to death. Nice on a warm day. http://tinyurl.com/6o3gqy 11:40 AM June 22, 2008

  • @Pistachio- I've changed jobs several times when the parameters changed to "why can't you be what we want for _this_ position?" Sorry, no. 02:35 PM June 23, 2008

  • @missrogue- I looked up "out of pocket" and found http://tinyurl.com/2bn3s - looks like the "unavailable" meaning could be 25 years old! 08:46 PM June 24, 2008

  • Smell of smoke in the air again this morning. Only fog as far as I can see, but scent is a.disturbing reminder. Trim brush this weekend. 07:41 AM June 25, 2008

  • @douglaskarr- when I wrote my thesis I worked diligently to reword sentences so as never to say either "data is" (my choice) OR "data are". 08:38 AM June 25, 2008

  • Many references now support popular use of "data" as a singular noun. Read http://tinyurl.com/4vb3jo for a particularly cogent explanation. 08:42 AM June 25, 2008

  • @megfowlerThe most inefficient part of my day is always the "getting started" part. Reloading memory from yesterday. Where was I? What now? 10:20 AM June 26, 2008

  • A co-worker has built a cubicle room divider (with door) using the "Nomad System" cardboard panels from MIO. Cool. http://tinyurl.com/2aupfk 02:53 PM June 26, 2008
