Weekly Wrap-up 2008_22

Three Weeks since my last Weekly Wrapup. The days have contained much fuss and bother, full of sound and fury, but signifying nothing much worth sharing, really.

I called Mom to say Happy Mothers' Day. She said they'd taken the Brownies to the Community Theatre to see a production called "Queen Moya and the Magic Cupcake".

We had a heat wave, several days of Quite Warm weather followed by the fog coming in and the default breeze coming back.

I ran into a former co-worker from my second fulltime job. We're now working at the same company again and he was on the shuttle from the train station one morning. We caught up.

The Job went through a few days of confusion. My "style" is once again at odds with what my managers wish it to be. As in the "real world", you can't change people. That's a lesson many managers find difficult to swallow. They think their job includes changing people.

I ran into a TWiki page at work named -. Yes, -. Just -. SIGH.

One night, I pulled into a local shopping center to pick something up at the drugstore. A SMART Car (Dalmatian spotted) drove into the lot and I watched it make a full circuit, just driving around and then out again. They're cute. I wouldn't have one but they are cure.

I took advantage of the three-day Memorial Day weekend to upgrade my desktop Macintosh to Mac OS X 10.5.2 Leopard. There were a few minor bumps but all in all the upgrade went pretty smoothly. Except for one hardware problem...

Around 9 pm, following the last software update and reboot, I had a disturbing surprise. My backup disk (external firewire drive) didn't mount any more. It was running, it just didn't appear on the desktop.

We tried various things. It worked on the laptop. It worked on USB 2. It failed on Firewire 400 and 800. Distressed, I left it running on USB 2 and went away.

Tuesday being a back-to-Work day, I approached the computer with some trepidation. The portable drive I use for Work is a Firewire drive. Would it mount??

Well, I couldn't find the end of the cable to plug in the portable drive. I hunted around, moved the monitor, and found the cable. BOTH ends were plugged into my Firewire hub. That's not right.

I don't recall doing anything with Firewire cables but apparently, sometime the previous night, I had short-circuited the Firewire hub. I unlooped the cable and decided to try the backup disk on Firewire again. Success. Duh.

In the past three weeks, I have read Road to Ruin, a Dortmunder novel by Donald Westlake; The Diamond Isle, by Stan Nicholls; Kluge, by Gary Marcus; A College of Magics, by Caroline Stevermer; and Past Imperative, first in a trilogy by Dave Duncan.

In between and around the rest, I've had nearly enough naps and oodles of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've chatted with my sister and found topics to twitter.

Onward and Upward.
