I knew about GIANTmicrobes (plushy replicas of the "bugs" that cause flu, the "common" cold, strep throat, and the like). They're available from ThinkGeek and a previous co-worker had a few in his cubicle. What I hadn't realized is how many there are now!

Rich brought me an E. coli from The Tech museum gift shop. Then I went to the GIANTmicrobes web site . Wow. Neurons, toxic mold, red and white blood cells, rabies, mange, dust mites, bed bugs, penicillin mold, athletes's foot.... Bacteria, Yeast, Viruses, Algae, and so many more.

They've even started a "Professional" line, by request from health care professionals. HIV, Hepatitis C, Tuberculosis, and Polio. Oh my!

"...we believe that GIANTmicrobes™ can indeed be used effectively to convey information about public-health diseases in a unique and memorable way.

Although designed for health care professionals, our new products are available to the general public as well, as the dissemination of information is exactly the point."

As they say at ThinkGeek: Most folks never realize how cute microbes can be when expanded 1,000,000 times and then fashioned into cuddly plush. ... Keep one on your desktop to remind yourself that there is an "invisible" universe out there filled with very small things that can do incredible damage to much bigger things. Then go and wash your hands.
