Weekly Wrap-up 2008_02

The weather was mostly grey, foggy, and/or wet. The big storm continued with heavy rain early in the week but not as much wind..

We discovered a disk problem on our primary server last Friday. :-( We spent much of Saturday restoring all of the data onto a new drive.

There were some unexpected snags. The entire Movable Type installation was missing. I reinstalled from scratch. #&$*! Yes, we're supposed to do regular backups. We've been having... problems with the backup software. New regime in place now.

We played some games with procmail this week I rewrote our procmailrc file to improve performance. Now everything goes through SpamAssassin first, then we remove the high-ranked spam, THEN we do the whitelist tests. The whitelist tests were heavy processing.

Rich wrote a nice little script that makes the whitelist checking a lot faster too. It's tested; it's just not installed yet. Real Soon Now... Need more tuits.

I got an interesting project request for Work - could I please create a division Status Report form for use at weekly meeting with upper management. The spec was pretty clear, which was god because the first meeting was the next day (eek) and it would be nice to show a prototype to our VP in 2 hours (Eek!).

I did it. VP was very pleased.

It was DARK on the train on Thursday morning. The sky was overcast; no sun to see. This train is "wrapped" in an AT&T Yellow Pages ad. In theory, you can see through it from the inside looking out. However, in practice...

With it being such a dark day, there wasn't much light outside the windows. Because it was morning, there were no streetlights, building lights, car headlights. out there. So the covering on the windows was practically opaque. It was like night in an airplane.

The Company has "improved" TWiki searching by causing all searches to run on another server. That server has a file cache which is updated (usually) every 10 minutes. Except when it's not.(On Tuesday, preparing the prototype page for the VP, the cache took nearly an hour to update and I was getting a bit antsy given that I on;y _had_ two hours total!)

So, with the new system, if the cache hasn't updated, searches (indexes) will fail to show pages that have been updated or created recently. They may also show pages that were recently deleted. Not good, this. Not good at all. We do a lot of TWiki applications which rely on dynamic indexing and now the indexes can't be trusted.

This week I read Glass Houses and The Dead Girls' Dance, both by Rachel Caine (books #1 and #2 in the Morganville Vampires series)

In between and around the rest, I've had nearly enough naps and oodles of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've chatted with my sister and found topics to twitter.

Onward and Upward.
