Weekly Wrap-up 2007_24

The weather was warm. It's been nice to come home to our house and open windows.

Rich went into WWDC every day, attending sessions and learning new things. Lots of new things in Leopard.

I mentioned last week that I'm scheduling interviews at Work. At 9 am on Tuesday, we all got a note – get your afternoon schedule to Vicki asap, a candidate will be here at 3pm. People got their information to me in a timely manner and I put together a schedule.

Then the candidate showed up an hour early. Okaaay. It's our manager's decision what to do about that. Apparently we'll start the interviews at 2pm. Then the interviewer scheduled for 3pm decided to move up to share the 2pm slot, so I had to back fill the 3pm slot. By now, everyone else was in meetings and difficult to reach. And, of course, there was no room reserved at 2pm, so they "found" one... it was empty til 2:30 when it was needed for ... wait for it... a different interview.

So we had the Itinerant Interview and Rescheduling by IRC with less than an hour's notice and several people incommunicado. Happy happy joy joy.

I'm glad this isn't my regular job.

More fun and games... We have a new employee, transitioning from another team to ours in August. Our manager had a Mac laptop, left from a previous employee, that he offered for her to use until she's full-time with us. There's only one problem - we don't have the former employee's password.

OK. No biggie. I've done this before.

Rebooted in Single User mode... fsck... mount the disk writable... That's odd. The passwd command times out and nidump hangs.

I checked my notes. I had forgotten a step.

sh /etc/rc
I got an error message ... "unbound variable".
Huh??

Google Google Google. This is NOT a Tiger system. Oooh. Mac OS X 10.3.something. Hmm. So, I did another search to learn how to boot in (usable) single user mode in Panther. Ah. Aha. Weird incantations. Commands of many characters typed carefully. And...

YES! I'm in!

Reset the password for administrator, reboot, create account for new user, log in, all's well. Ta Da.

Abracadabra et Cetera!

This week I finished Dead Beat, by Jim Butcher (a Dresden Files book). These keep getting better. I also read A Deadly Game of Magic, by Joan Lowery Nixon.

In between and around the rest, I've had almost enough naps and plenty of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've had a few chats with my sister and exchanged email with my Mom.

Onward and Upward.
