Weekly Wrap-up 2007_01

Happy 2007!

The weather has been mostly fair, except for rain on Thursday. That was also the day someone parked a car on the CalTrain tracks in San Bruno and, apparently, walked away...

I picked a great day to wake up 15 minutes early and decide "hey, I can catch the 7:17 train." I did catch that train... eventually. Eventually being about 7:55. In the interim, people waiting for two earlier trains, as well as for the 7:17 and the 7:29, huddled under the overhang watching the LED signboard for updates. At least we did get a few updates. Often, CalTrain is conspicuously silent about sharing information with the riders and even with its own staff.

Finally, the 6:45 train went shooting past (signboard: "CalTrain 208 will express to Redwood City; CalTrain 210 will make all stops"), followed 10 minutes later by a train that stopped. I sat back and watched most of the people get on. Why crowd into an overcrowded "local"?

Five minutes after that, "my" train pulled into the station and I rode it, as usual, to Mountain View where the Company shuttle was waiting. (That's one of the very nice things about a company shuttle; it waits.)

Thursday was an unfortunate day all around. The bread delivery guy never showed up at the Company, so there was no oatmeal bread at lunch. :-( They were also out of black tea for the brewed iced tea, and I had forgotten to make up my usual iced coffee before I left home. Sigh. I had a bacon, egg, and cheese croissant sandwich to compensate. :)

We've been doing some hardware reorganization at home. We bought and installed an Airport Express Wireless base station. That's been a lot of fun. I just open the laptop and... poof! I'm on the net.

Rich has also been going around the house, scrounging UPSs out from wherever we've been putting them, and testing whether they're still any good. He's testing with an (analog) electric clock and a 100W lightbulb. One of the "out of service" UPSs could run the bulb for 6 minutes. The supposed "in-service" UPS under my desk held a charge for all of 4 seconds. Oops.

Rich has ordered some new batteries, where applicable. Those UPSs that can't be fixed will be recycled.

This week I read Snuffed Out, by Tim Myers. This is the second in his "candle shop" mystery series.

In between and around the rest, I've had almost enough naps and plenty of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. The exterior tree lights have come down (and been wound up and stored until next year) and I'm practicing writing "2007".

Onward and Upward.
