Weekly Wrap-up 2006_08

The weather was nice until Sunday. Then we got grey skies and rain again. Still, it beats last weekend. Not as cold.

News from the Job Search front: I didn't get the job I wanted. They "decided to go with someone else". Major bummer. :-(

I've applied at Google. It's nearly impossible even to get an interview at Google (if if you're good, which I am. Really!).

On Thursday, we decided to get industrious and repair the carpet on the outside vertical post of the kitchen cat tree. The result looks good. It's a different color but it blends in well.

My Dad has installed Apple Remote Desktop on both his computer and my Mom's (we needed the previous version for my Mom's computer because it runs System 9.2. After much time and hassle over the telephone we had Proof of Concept. I could "see" Mom's computer on the network. Unfortunately, I had sent her the 1.0 client but I was running the 1.2 admin program so... I couldn't do anything other than ping the computer on the net. Still... I gave Dad instructions for upgrading the ARD client (that was more frustrating than it should have been!) and had him re-cable to modem and firewall connections. Yoicks! We'll try an actual control & observe situation another time.

This week I read Freakonomics, an intriguing book by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner. I read three more Evan Tanner novels by Lawrence Block — The Canceled Czech, Tanner's Twelve Swingers (weird :-) and Two for Tanner (grittier).

I also read A Vision of Murder, third in the "Psychic Eye" series by Victoria Laurie — try these if you like mysteries; they're great fun. And I read Snobbery with Violence by Marion Chesney. This is the first book in a new series of Edwardian cozies; I really like the characters so far!

We also watched Wallace and Gromit in Curse of the Were Rabbit (on DVD). If you haven't seen this yet, rent it, buy it, or borrow it! It's delightful. The BunVac 6000 is especially fun to watch and the were-rabbit of the title is monstrous and fuzzy!

In between and around the rest, I've had almost enough naps and plenty of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've had a few chats with my Dad and exchanged email with my Mom. I keep applying for jobs.

Onward and Upward.
