Weekly Wrap-up 2006_04
The weather was mostly fair, except for rain on Saturday evening.
I had a peculiar computer experience on Monday. Most of my address book was mysteriously... gone. Replaced, I don't know how, by addresses from a job I had in 2003?! It took multiple tries and several frustrating hours to find the files in backup (they are considered to be "databases" and not easy to locate) and then reinstall them so that the Address Book program would see them and use them. Gack!
This was my birthday week. I got a free pasta dish from Pasta Pomodoro on Monday for lunch and a free lunch at Todai Japanese buffet on Sunday.
Rich channeled Harry Homeowner this week and invented a calendar holder-upper for me. My office calendar is so much easier to see and I don't have to crane my neck around to do it.
We had another Beer and Scripting SIG dinner at Wild Pepper. This is a very good Chinese restaurant! I haven't yet had any dish I didn't like. I even liked the tofu in the string beans with tofu and garlic sauce (and tofu is something of a hit or miss proposition). This chef can "do" tofu!
Afterwards, we headed over to Mitchell's Ice Cream where Rich and I shared a hot apple pie sundae — two scoops of ice cream, hot apple pie filling (apples in cinnamon sauce), and pieces of pie crust. Yummm.
I signed up for our telephone bill to be automatically paid by credit card each month. I don't ever want to have another SNAFU like we had this month!
Rich and I have been playing with MediaWiki (the Wiki that underlies Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and other sites). We've been enjoying ourselves. Rich is experimenting with IBIS; this is part of long-standing research interest of his.
I had a face-to-face job interview on Saturday afternoon. I've had a phone interview before this. I think the meeting; it was more of an extended conversation than an "interview" in many ways. I believe this job could be very interesting and that I could do a lot for the product and the company. The CTO believes in Documentation and views Documentation, Quality, and Process as important, inter-related practices (as do I). We could work well together.
Hedging my bets (never put all of your ducks in one basket) I have a phone interview for a different job on Monday. Also, Rich has an in-person interview for a job on Monday. Perhaps things are looking up on our job-hunt frontier.
I'm still managing to get to 100 steps each time on the stepper (although I haven't gotten much higher yet. Rich made it to 400 one night this week. Wow!). The stepper proved itself on Sunday when I walked to the 5th level of the parking garage, after a very large lunch, without too much protest!
This week I have been reading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, by JK Rowling. I know, I'm behind. It happens..
In between and around the rest, I've had almost enough naps and plenty of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've had a few chats with my Dad and exchanged email with my Mom. I also had a nice birthday telephone conversation with my folks. Unfortunately for my Dad, I cannot fix his computer over the phone.
Gung Hay Fat Choy!
This is the Year of the Dog.
Onward and Upward.
