Weekly Wrap-up 2006_02

The weather has been mostly sunny and cool, although we had rain overnight Friday (it cleared by Saturday morning).

I still have a nagging cough (mostly a lot of hrrm hrrm! throat clearing). Rich convinced me to call our medical group. They told me this is not uncommon, however my doctor did prescribe a stronger cough syrup that is (YES!) helping. In fact, I know exactly when it's time (hrrm hrrm!) to take the next dose.

By the way, I've been wondering when it was that "cherry cough syrup" flavor was invented. It's certainly a special taste all its own.

Rich gave a presentation on Model-based Documentation this week at a Ruby language "meet-up". I went along. Unfortunately, the meeting was at a coffee bar in the SF financial district. Pedestrian and auto traffic are bad in that area at 6pm. Worse, a two-block area in both directions from the venue was "under construction" with no parking tow-away zones posted on both sides of the street. It took us about 45 minutes to find a place to park. Ugh!

This was the week of MacWorld Expo. We went in on Thursday. It was large, packed, noisy, and over-crowded. I didn't spend much time on the show floor.

The Jan 16 TidBITS newsletter (#812) explains why I thought MacWorld was too big, too crowded, too noisy, and seriously agoraphobic this year.

In 2004, there were 260 vendors scattered woefully throughout both halls. In 2005, IDG World Expo wised up and combined all 280 booths into the South Hall. This year once again filled only the South Hall, but it was chock full with 361 vendors. Official attendance numbers aren't yet available, but early impressions indicated that attendance would once again increase from last year's nearly 36,000 attendees.
Yargh.

Rich and I have both been reworking our resumes. I have decided that I believe the purpose of a resume should be first to tell a prospective employer (actually the broker working for the employer) who you are and second to list where you have worked previously. So we've been rearranging, rewriting, and refactoring. Whether the rework will bring us any interviews remains to be seen.

This week I read The Burglar Who Thought he was Bogart, by Lawrence Block; Death by Deep Dish Pie and Death in the Cards, by Sharon Short; The Silver Anniversary Murder, by Lee Harris; and Blue Moon Rising, a fantasy novel by Simon Green.

In between and around the rest, I've had almost enough naps and plenty of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals (stuffed chili burgers, ginger chicken, pork roast) and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've had some e-chats with my Dad and a friend in Texas and exchanged email with my sister.

Onward and Upward.
