Weekly Wrap-up 2005_26

The weather started out grey and foggy early in the week but it's been pretty and blue for the past few days.

Rich was out of town last weekend. The cats and I snuggled and I read.

I decided to install Visio (under Virtual PC) for The Job. Unfortunately, I don't run Windows much or often (I think it's been two years) and hadn't updated in a long time. Visio insisted it needed the latest Service Pack before I could install. So... It took most of the weekend to get to where I could install Visio. Somewhere in the midst of the updating of Windows, Service Packs, and security patches, something went wrong and it wouldn't boot. I had to start over from scratch. Yuck! The second time I made a lot of intermediate backups just in case (the second time was successful).

I think there were some 70 service packs and security patches in all. Ugh!

Rich bought me a t-shrt at the Apple store. The front says, in small letters:

Air. Water. UNIX.

I now appear to "own" much of the Intranet content at The Job (with the stipulation that I ensure this doesn't become a full time job). I don't think it will and I wouldn't want that anyway; I have much wider hopes for the scope of my job description than "webmaster" :-)

I had a few meetings this week and things seem to be generally perking along at The Job.

We closed the week with fireworks at Stanford. We stopped off at a Whole Foods Market on the drive down and bought a picnic. Nice store! I wish there was one closer to our house! We had some lovely chicken salad with big chunks of chicken, celery, grapes, and walnuts, and spinach salad with strawberries.

Then, as we did last year, we joined the crowd on the back side of the Stanford amphitheatre. We had a great view of the fireworks (from ground to air). I could have done without the people nearest us (gabble gabble) but the show was impressive nonetheless.

After the show, we took our folding chairs and lap blankets back to the car, then went for a walk around the campus for about 45 minutes until most of the traffic cleared. It was a long evening. We left the house at 7 and got back somewhat after 11.

This week was good for reading! I read Dead to the World, by Charlane Harris (the latest in her Southern Vampire mystery series), It Had to Be You, by Jill Churchill (the latest Grace and Favor mystery), and the first three Blackbird sisters mysteries by Nancy Martin: How to Murder a Millionaire, Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds, and Some Like it Lethal. I also read Death at Wentwater Court, the first Daisy Dalrymple mystery by Carola Dunn (and then ordered the rest of the series!).

In between and around the rest, I've had almost enough naps and plenty of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've had a few chats with my Dad; my Mom is busy with her summer job and hasn't had much time for email!

Onward and Upward.
