Freecycle

What do you have sitting on a shelf, under the stairs, or gathering dust in a closet?
What do you have that you never use but that's too good to throw out?
What do you wish you could just give away to someone who wants it?

How do you find the person who wants it?

The Freecycle Network™ is made up of many individual groups across the globe. It's a grassroots movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. Each local group is run by a local volunteer moderator (them's good people). Membership is free.

The Freecycle Network was started in May 2003 to promote waste reduction in Tucson's downtown and help save desert landscape from being taken over by landfills. The Network provides individuals and non-profits an electronic forum to "recycle" unwanted items. One person's trash can truly be another's treasure!

Rich found a home for an old radio that he picked up a while back, thinking he would refurbish (and never got around to doing much with). Our sunroom is less clutterd and someone has a project to play with.

I found a home for a pair of HP 320 LX WinCE handhelds. Someone on the list had asked for an older PDA; he got two for the price of one (and both were free :-). Now there's more space on our shelf.

We found a home for our older Motorola StarTac phone (plus accessories), replaced in our affections (and car) by a newer model earlier this year. It was a perfectly good phone (and some of the batteries were still unused).

When you want to find a new home for something -- whether it's a chair, a fax machine, piano, or an old door -- you simply send an e-mail offering it to members of your Freecycle group.

Or, maybe you're looking to acquire something yourself. Simply respond to a member's offer, and you just might get it. After that, it's up to the giver to decide who receives the gift and to set up a pickup time for passing on the treasure.

One main rule: Everything posted must be free, legal, and appropriate for all ages.

There are currently 2,724 Freecycle Communities and well over a million members! There are grooups in the US and Canada, Australia, Germany, the UK, and nearly 50 other countries.

What do you have sitting on a shelf, under the stairs, or gathering dust in a closet? Join the Freecycle Network™" nearest you, find someone who wants that wwhateveritis, and make room for something else!
