Weekly Wrap-up 2005_06
The weather has been fairly warm all week (to the extent that long-sleeved shirts were no appropriate for the Job. We had some drizzle starting Friday but nothing I'd call "rain".
I got the last of our Majordomo mailing lists moved over to GoogleGroups (beta). No more Majordomo used here.
Rich has installed a copy of FreeBSD 5.3 on a newly upgraded motherboard, etc. As is often the case with such projects, it took longer than expected and caused no small amount of frustration. I helped in some small fashion by coming along on the (last) trip to CompUSA, assisting with some cabling, and (most of all) donating my birthday present power supply to the cause!
The project took up a large part of a day; now comes the part where Rich and/or I start copying files and setting up the software side.
We'd been thinking of cooking up a batch of pork and sauerkraut and finally got around to it on Sunday after brunch. We stopped by our favorite grocery store and bought a bone-in pork loin roast which the butcher kindly removed the bone from. Took that home where Rich sliced and chopped for 45 minutes, then added sauerkraut (I prefer the kind in jars in the deli case), chicken broth (the secret ingredient), water and chopped red onion (the ingredient Rich added when he started cooking the dish. My mother never puts in onion).
It's interesting to smell the changes as the whole thing cooks. First there's a lot of edge from the onion and the sauerkraut but that mellows over time. You know it's getting done when it smells ready. Our friend Gene joined us for dinner; we added baked potatoes (gotta scoop the pork&sauerkraut over something!) and had quite a feast. We'll have a couple of meals again and then I'll freeze a bunch.
This week I finished This Dog for Hire, by Carol Lea Benjamin. Reading books with well-trained dogs as major characters is interesting for me. I'm vaguely envious (I'd like to have a dog like that) but I also realize what an intense amount of work is required to have a dog like that. It's kind of like reading about really bright, well-trained, extraordinary kids. I'd be proud to be Hermione Granger's mother, but most kids aren't Hermione Granger.
In between and around the rest, I've had almost enough naps and plenty of snuggles with the cats. There have been good meals and interesting conversations with Spouse and friends. I've had a few chats with my Dad and exchanged email with my mom and sister.
Onward and Upward.
