Sugar Free Sensation

Hershey's has announced (and begun distributing) Sugar Free York Peppermint Patties. They're not calorie free, of course, but the sugar has been replaced with maltitol and lactitol, two polyols or "sugar alcohols". Sugar alcohols have a minimal effect on blood sugar. People watching their carbohydrate intake can subtract the effects of fiber or sugar alcohols from the total carbohydrate numbers in the nutritional information on the package.

Sugar free York peppermint patties also have only 4g of fat in a serving (3 patties). For reasons I can't quite understand, most other brands of peppermint patty candy have a lot more fat; considering that Junior Mints (another favorite peppermint drop of mine) claim they are a "fat-free food" (although "food" does stretch credulity), I simply can't understand what the fat is for.

So, OK, these still aren't "free". But once in a while, they're better for my diet than the regular version. And they taste exactly the same.

Look for sugar free Hershey's candies at your nearest store. I found mine at Walgreens.
