Low Carb Granola

I love Granola. Unfortunately, we're presently on a long-term reduced carbohydrate adventure so most granolas are out for the time being. However, one of the women on the low-carb mailing list I'm on recently recommended a low-carb granola called "FlaxOMeal Granola" (Low-Carb Success brand). Several other women chimed in to agree that they think it's quite tasty.

I found some today while shopping at one of our local grocery stores (a small local chain called Mollie Stones, a bit upscale from Safeway :-) Mollie Stones has joined the Low-carb revolution, having recently installed a large endcap display at the front of the store, containing all sorts of varied low-carb products and "We Have Low-Carb" on a big sign. Cool.

I bought a bag of the "Cinnamon Nutrageous" flavor (anything with pecans as the first ingredient is going to entice me!). It's high in fiber; sweetened with maltitol and Splenda. Contains pecans, almonds, wheat bran, flax seed, oats. Does not contain preservatives, hydrogenated oils, or sugar. After subtracting the sugar alcohols and the fiber, you're left with 1g of (net) carb per 1/2 cup serving.

It comes in a convenient "ziploc"-style bag. I tried a piece before I drove home. Then I tried another (just for comparison, of course ;-) The chunks are large; the bits the chunks are composed of are small and the flavor is...

    Oh My
    This stuff is good

...quite tasty.

I suppose it wouldn't be right for me to eat most of the bag in one sitting, would it? :-) That could get expensive too. Sigh. (Also the maltitol and the flax seed in 9 oz. might have... shall we say... undesirable internal effects :)

If you have a real sweet-tooth, you may find this granola is not "sweet enough" for your taste. I think it's perfectly sweetened. The cinnamon flavor is subtle, not at all overdone. To me, there's a definite sense of graham crackers about this stuff — it has that fibery texture and mouth feel and the not-over-sweet taste that I associate with graham crackers. (I realize that could be a poor explanation but I mean it in a good way).

I thought it was yummy. I bet it would freeze well.

Look for it in your better groceries and health foods stores, or on the web (Google "Low Carb Success" Flax-o-meal Granola.
