Classic Cars

I've always loved "Classic Cars" - cars from the 40's, the 30's... Model A, Model T. One of the nice things about living in the San Francisco Bay Area is that the generally pleasant weather allows Classic Car owners to drive their cars year round - sometimes as their regular transportation.

When I was growing up in central Pennsylvania, we'd occasionally see nice old cars, always with the special yellow-on-purple antique car plate, always in the summer when the weather was good. It was always a special treat to see one. It still is, but now it's a treat I enjoy more often!

We saw a beauty this morning, a late 30's / early 40's sedan. It was cherry red (not the original paint job :) and had a regular DMV vanity plate. I'd love to have a car like that, but it would be a lot of work and $$ to keep it up, and it would need a garage (we have a garage but it's full of workshop :)

The 53rd Annual Concours d'Elegance is being held next weekend at Pebble Beach. I wish we could go, it's considered a premier classic automobile event, but tickets are priced at $100 a head! Proceeds go to charity, but still, that's a lot of money. I guess I'll need to be content with seeing the occasional vintage gem driving past me on the street. Maybe next year...

We saw another one later tonight, this one a 50's model with a snazzy gold paint job that shimmered... and just a hint of black lightnig bolts near the tail fins. Handsome car, nicely restored and detailed.
