"A Home without a cat, and a well-fed, well-petted and properly revered cat, may be a perfect home, perhaps, but how can it prove it's title?" — Mark Twain

Clifton Strengths Profile

Background

Excerpt from the Clifton StrenghtsFinder "A Brief Overview of Talent Discovery and Strengths Development".

When you see a strength in action, you see a person's ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance in a specific activity. When you see him or her perform that activity, you think, "She makes it look so easy!" or "He's a natural!"

How can that be? How can they so consistently perform with such excellence? The answer is simple: It is easy for her. He is a natural.

Each is performing at such a high level simply by building upon how he or she most naturally thinks, feels, and behaves: their greatest talents. As unique individuals, we each have our own special ways of successfully approaching the people and events in our lives. And our greatest talents are always there for us. We instinctively use them in almost any situation.

The Clifton StrengthFinder assessment is not just another personality test. That difference is no accident. In fact, the idea behind the assessment is quite contrary to the focus-on-negatives approach that has long prevailed in our society.

In the early 1950s, Donald O. Clifton, who would go on to be named the "Father of Strengths Psychology," noticed a major problem: The field of psychology was based almost entirely on the study of what is wrong with people. He wondered if it would be more important to study what is right with people.

Signature Themes

The Signature Themes report below displays my five most dominant themes of talent, as indicated by my responses to Clifton StrengthsFinder, The Gallup Organization's Web-based talent assessment tool.

MY SIGNATURE THEMES

Maximizer: People strong in the Maximizer theme focus on strengths as a way to stimulate personal and group excellence. They seek to transform something strong into something superb.

Input: People strong in the Input theme have a craving to know more. Often they like to collect and archive all kinds of information.

Strategic: People strong in the Strategic theme create alternative ways to proceed. Faced with any given scenario, they can quickly spot the relevant patterns and issues.

Intellection: People strong in the Intellection theme are characterized by their intellectual activity. They are introspective and appreciate intellectual discussions.

Learner: People strong in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them.

"RESPONSIVE" THEMES

There are 34 themes in the Clifton Strengths Finder. Looking them over, I resonate with several that weren't in my top five, according to the results of the StrengthsFinder exercise. As the Strengths Guide points out:

Of course, your "top five" are just a starting point as you move from the potential of talent to the excellence of strength in action. Along the way, you can find many opportunities for discovery and development ..."
The StrengthsFinder calls these "responsive themes".
... the practical purpose of StrengthsFinder is to highlight your dominant patterns of thought, feeling, or behavior. Here we are drawing a distinction between your signature themes and your responsive themes.

Your signature themes are those that you lead with. No matter the situation, they filter your world, forcing you to behave in certain recurring ways. By contrast, your responsive themes fire only occasionally, usually when a very particular situation presents itself.

Although the StrengthsFinder assessment does not include the 6th - nth themes in its results, I strongly believe that the following themes also apply to me.

MY RESPONSIVE THEMES

Analytical: People strong in the Analytical theme search for reasons and causes. They have the ability to think about all the factors that might affect a situation.

[ I am frequently surprised after completing this sort of assessment tool to discover that "Analytical" is not in my profile. I know I'm analytical. My first question, on receiving my results, is always "Show me the data". Apparently, other "themes" are just enough stronger that this one. Food for thought... - vlb ]

Arranger People strong in the Arranger theme can organize, but they also have a flexibility that complements this ability. They like to figure out how all of the pieces and resources can be arranged for maximum productivity.

Belief: People strong in the Belief theme have certain core values that are unchanging. Out of these values emerges a defined purpose for their life.

Discipline People strong in the Discipline theme enjoy routine and structure. Their world is best described by the order they create.

Responsibility People strong in the Responsibility theme take psychological ownership of what they say they will do. They are committed to stable values such as honesty and loyalty.
