Resetting Your Cable or DSL Connection

If your cable or DSL Internet connection goes dead, don't bother trouble-shooting on the computer. Usually the problem is that your cable modem or router/base station have stopped communicating.

This is one page that makes sense to print out, because when you need it you won't be able to reach this web page to get it. Keep a copy handy near your cable or DSL modem.

  1. Shut down the computer or put it to sleep.
  2. Turn off the cable modem and your router/base station (if you have one). The easiest thing is to just pull the power cable from each unit. (Don't mix them up!)
  3. Turn the cable modem on again.
  4. Wait a full minute for the modem to restart. Trust me here: if you move to the next step too soon, you'll have to start the procedure again.
  5. If you have a router or base station, turn it on and wait another thirty seconds.
  6. Wake or start the computer. If you're using a wireless base station, you may have to choose your wireless network again from the Airport menu next to the time display at the top right. After about 10-15 seconds, you should be able to get online again.
