Recording for Multimedia

When it comes time to add sound to your multimedia project, it's natural to attempt to record directly with the computer. But your sound quality often suffers due to cheap microphones, audio hardware limitations, poor room acoustics and even the noise of the computer itself. And what do you do when you need to add music---say, a soft acoustic guitar background?

Our high-quality microphones, digital recorders, sound processors and mixing equipment can help you create the best quality recordings of your voiceovers, sound effects and music. Your completed recordings can then be put on a DAT or standard audio cassette for transfer to your computer system, or we can burn a CD-R with audio files in the format you need. We can also arrange to hire talented voice professionals for the best voiceover results.

Design Services:

We can also provide design and setup assistance for project studios, from specification to equipment selection to wiring and troubleshooting.

A Short Word On Modular Digital Multitrack Recording

A Modular Digital Multitrack deck is simply a digital tape recorder with the ability to be connected to other, similar recorders, in a "modular" fashion to build up a "wider" recorder. Most MDMs have 8 tracks; up to 16 units can be connected, thus giving up to 128 tracks. With this system, you only need tape in 8-track chunks, adding additional cartridges as the project expands.

The most common MDMs are the Alesis ADAT family and the Tascam family (DA-88, DA-38, DA-78HR and the DA-98). Both record and play up to 8 tracks of CD-quality digital audio (16 bits at 44.1 or 48KHz). The Alesis and DA-38 units are more popular in the smaller project studios, whereas the Tascam DA-88 and DA-98 are the standard in the pro video, film, and soundtrack business.

Both systems sound good and work well. We prefer the 2-hour recording time of the Tascam over the Alesis' 40 to 60 minutes (especially for location recording!), as well as the better reliability of the Tascam units when both brands first came out.
