The Great Server Migration Is Completed

For many years, we ran cfcl.com on FreeBSD. This was generally good, except that updates are a real pain. So, lately, we'd been on FB 4.7 while the world moved on to 5.* and then 6. Ouch.

We've been talking about migrating to Mac OS X for the past three years and finally, technology, interest, time, and willpower intersected. Most of the tools and applications we want are now either installed by default or easy to get and install. So, in December, we drew a collective deep breath and dove in.

It took most of December, but our most-used services have been migrated successfully. cfcl.com is now running on MacOS X Tiger on a Mac mini. Be impressed. :-)

We've checked and verified:

Email

  • send and receive; forwarding
  • POP
  • Procmail
  • SpamAssassin

Web services

  • HTML, SHTML
  • CGI
  • PHP (v. 4.4.4)
  • Virtual Hosts

MySQL

  • v. 4.1.7

Weblogs and Wikis

  • Movable Type, WordPress, and Greymatter
  • TWiki
(Note: Media Wiki is currently experiencing technical difficulties.)

I'm sure there are things we haven't tried. We've likely missed something (e.g. we only caught Server Side Includes this past week.). If you see a problem, let us know.
